The article describes a 5-year, NIH-funded educational research program teaching 6ththrough 8th grade students in underserved Flint and Detroit, MI schools diabetes and substance use prevention with a community-based focus using Next Generation Science Standards. The program registered a 12% pre/post gain in perceived learning about genes and the environment as well as statistically significant gains in perceived learning about health and health conditions and the importance of what students learned to everyday life. Parents and community members helped with the community action research projects and discussed what the students were learning with them.
